With ten years’ chaplaincy experience culminating in a Master of Social Science from Edith Cowan University, Tim Mullen brings a wealth of learning and experience to his new role as adjunct lecturer in Tabor Perth’s Youth Work program.

Born in Sydney, raised in Perth, Tim now works as a chaplain for Youth CARE and is married with a nine-month-old child. His passion for travel, fitness and hiking has seen him gain significant experience in church youth ministry, cross-cultural young adult ministry, and youth work – both locally and abroad. When asked what excites him about working with young people, Tim says:

“I’m passionate about youth work not because ‘youth are the future’ as is often said, but because youth are now. They are often dismissed, criticised, but also placed under immense pressure to be something.”

As part of his masters study, Tim undertook research into why young people leave the church. Both his research and experience have led Tim to believe there is a vital role to be played by the church in helping young people find meaning and belonging. As Tim puts it:

“I believe youth deserve and long to be acknowledged as people who are important now, not people who will be important once they reach a certain age.”

Reflecting on his recent experience adapting to his new role at Tabor Perth, Tim says:

“I love the sense of community, the staff culture, the integration of spirituality into professionalism, and a strong vibe of care and compassion.”

May God bless you, Tim, as you work with the team at Tabor Perth to fulfill your vision for building the Youth Work program and raising the profile of young people in our church and community.
